2016 Buyer's Guide Dedication
The dedication of the New Jersey Peach Buyers Guide for 2016 was recently announced by Santo John Maccherone, Chair of the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council to Larchmont Farms and its owners Charles Haines and Tom Dunn. Tom and Charles are the 11th generation Haines Family owners of Larchmont Farms, located in Elmer, New Jersey. The farm was incorporated in 1769 on land deeded to Richard Haines by King Charles in 1682 and has since been continuously producing and marketing fruits and vegetables. The original Larchmont Farms was located on the Marne Highway near Mt Laurel and Masonville and grew to 400 farms until it was moved to Elmer area in 1969.
Today, Larchmont Farms is the largest tree fruit growing operation in New Jersey. Under Charles, who serves as president, and Tom, production manager, Larchmont grows approximately 800 acres of peach and nectarines in Salem and Cumberland Counties. With a modern energy efficient peach storage and packing facility Larchmont peaches and nectarines are packed under the “Just Picked” label and shipped in a wide variety of packages across the US and Canada. It also operates a retail sales outlet out of its packing house.
Larchmont is noted for many growing and marketing innovations. In 2010 the entire farm was converted to run on Solar Power. Larchmont Farms uses less pesticides by disrupting the mating “signals” of insect pests using Pheromone soaked twist-ties that are attached to trees throughout the orchard. All fruit from Larchmont Farms is packed into boxes that are made from 100% recycled paper. The farm also uses geothermal heating and cooling.
Charles Haines and his family were instrumental in establishing the New Jersey Peach Promotion Council and Charles has served on the council as its Chair and Director. Charles and Tom have also been leaders in the testing and development of new peach and nectarine varieties. Larchmont was first to market new varieties like Easternglo nectarine, White Lady, Klondike, Ernie’s Choice, and many more.
The NJPPC is honored to dedicate this year’s annual buyer’s guide to Charles, Tom, and all of the members of the Larchmont organization for their support and leadership in the fruit industry.
